Marujodaro (Manjiri)

Bhuri finished making rotis early. She had to still fetch water from the well. It was drying day by day. If she did not reach the well early, the water accumulated during the night would be finished and she would have to go tot he well that was even further away. Nowadays she thought Suresh was right in suggesting going off to Jaipur. There was nothing left here.

She used to ask her Ma why do we have to go fetch water, why cant Bhaiyaa or Baba do it sometime. Ma was scandalized "Chup kar chori, ke anaab shanaab bake hai! This is woman's work and she should do it without complaint. Maruthal ka yo hi rivaaj se."  So they just kept fetching water.

She lifted her three handas on her head and one in each hand, she called to Muniya next door and they started their trudge. From afar the Sand dune Marujodaro was looming over the village. Standing still.

Mihira was steaming Apups today. It was getting hot lately. She wiped the sweat from her brow with her uttariya. The river Saraswati had changed her course again in the monsoon this year. Amb used to say there were a lot more trees in the area. They used to hold the river. But the trees were cut, and now Saraswati like free sheep ran helter skelter. Bhurishrava was worried about the sesame crop. Just the other day he mentioned that the GramSabha was seriously thinking of migrating eastward nearer to Alakapuri. Mihira shuddered at the thought of leaving everything behind. This abode, this land but if Ma Saraswati will it then what can one do? Just go with the flow.
